Study Finds Mobile Phones More Detrimental To TV Ad Viewing Than DVRs

Are you a fan of television? A big, big fan of television? If so, we have to ask: when is the last time you watched a full commercial? For years now, media companies have been running around with great concern that viewers were using DVRs to simply bypass commercials, making those pricey advertisements that much less valuable. But is the DVR the real problem? That's a question addressed by a new survey cited in Ad Age, and the results may shock you.

The Witcher 2 patch 1.1 removes DRM, boosts framerate

CD Projekt has released the first patch for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings today, delivering new content and fixing game-breaking performance issues. According to various user reports, the DRM mechanism that ships with retail versions of the game drastically reduces frame rates and loading times. One user quoted by TorrentFreak claims the SecuROM-riddled copy of Witcher 2 takes 32 seconds longer to launch, 8 seconds longer to save, and runs nearly twice as slow.

Chinese Prisoners Forced to Farm Video Game Currency

According to a report by the Guardian, Chinese prisoners are being forced to slave away at MMORPGs. One such detainee claims he was one of 300 people required to play games such as World of Warcraft in 12-hour shifts. That time was spent generation in-game money which the prison guards sold to other players for real-world currency, earning them as much as $924 per day, according to the Guardian's source. Prisoners wouldn't receive any of that money and failing to comply resulted in punishment.

Flickr to keep photos for 90 days after you delete your account

Yahoo's Flickr has implemented a change to its policy on deleted accounts. The photo sharing website will now keep photos and associated content for 90 days before erasing them for good. When you upload a photo, Flickr creates multiple copies of it, along with any data on tags, groups or sets you specified on upload, stored on multiple machines in multiple locations across the US. Previously, if you or the company decided to delete your account, Flickr deleted your photos immediately, making the decision to close an account almost irreversible.

A BASIC GUIDE TO THE INTERNET

The Internet is a computer network made up of thousands of networks worldwide. No one knows exactly how many computers are connected to the Internet. It is certain, however, that these number in the millions.

No one is in charge of the Internet. There are organizations which develop technical aspects of this network and set standards for creating applications on it, but no governing body is in control. The Internet backbone, through which Internet traffic flows, is owned by private companies.

All computers on the Internet communicate with one another using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol suite, abbreviated to TCP/IP. Computers on the Internet use a client/server architecture. This means that the remote server machine provides files and services to the user's local client machine. Software can be installed on a client computer to take advantage of the latest access technology.

LINKING YOUR XBOX TO YOUR COMPUTER

Linking Your Xbox To Your Computer

I. Introduction

Some basics and assumptions (the more you know, the more you UNDERSTAND):

Crossover cable: A crossover cable is needed to directly connect your computer and Xbox. You would plug one end of the cable to your computer and the other end into the Xbox, there are no devices in between. If you have a hub, switch, or router you will not need a crossover cable though some still will work with one. With connecting to hubs, switches, or routers you should use a straight-through cable. The image below shows the difference between the two:

HOW TO SPEED UP A SLOW COMPUTER

How To Speed Up A Slow Computer

first off in the bottom right hand corner of your computer if you see alot of icons start up there when you first start your computer then this is for you if you dont know already how to get rid of em.

Press your Start Button (bottom left) and go to "run"
now type in: msconfig
now you will get a box that pops up and will tell you bunch of stuff dont mess with anything else other than what I tell you otherwise you could do something really bad (possible) go to your "startup" tab on the top right of the screen where it usually is and click it.

HOW TO SET UP A HTTP SERVER RUNNING FROM YOU COMPUTER

How to set up a http server running from you computer

(Either you can set up a basic server which means you stop at step... or if you want to make a server with free address you can continue after that step)

1. We are going to use a program called hfs i like the beta version (2) you will need to download this program.
Go to www.rejetto.com/temp/hfs2.0beta23.zip

2. Make a folder where you wish to run it from for example C:/Program files/hfs or C:/Documents and settins/Username/My documents/Hfs

HOW TO SAFEGUARD YOUR FILES WHEN COMPUTER CRASHES

First thing to keep in mind: If your computer hasn't crashed yet, it will in the future! So instead of waiting for fate to strike, take some precautions now:

1) BACK-UP! Buy some decent DVD-R discs and put everything useful in them. When you have more useful stuff, backup again. Do this often.

2) Keep your computer healthy. Use an antivirus, an anti-spy, and a firewall. Keep them updated. Check regularly for Windows critical fixes.

3) Don't install software that would do dangerous things to your hard drive. A boot manager would fall in this category.

EVOLUTION OF COMPUTER VIRUSES HISTORY OF VIRUSES

part 1

Like any other field in computer science, viruses have evolved -a great deal indeed- over the years. In the series of press releases which start today, we will look at the origins and evolution of malicious code since it first appeared up to the present.

Going back to the origin of viruses, it was in 1949 that Mathematician John Von Neumann described self-replicating programs which could resemble computer viruses as they are known today. However, it was not until the 60s that we find the predecessor of current viruses. In that decade, a group of programmers developed a game called Core Wars, which could reproduce every time it was run, and even saturate the memory of other players’ computers. The creators of this peculiar game also created the first antivirus, an application named Reeper, which could destroy copies created by Core Wars.

COMPUTER MAINTANANCE

You may not realize it, but your computer and your car have something in common: they both need regular maintenance. No, you don't need to change your computer's oil. But you should be updating your software, keeping your antivirus subscription up to date, and checking for spyware. Read on to learn what you can do to help improve your computer's security.

Getting started

Here are some basics maintenance tasks you can do today to start improving your computer's security. Be sure you make these part of your ongoing maintenance as well.

BATCH FILE PROGRAMMING

Batch File Programming
__________________________________________________________________

Batch file programming is nothing but the Windows version of Unix Shell

Programming. Let's start by understanding what happens when we give a DOS

command. DOS is basically a file called command.com

It is this file (command.com) which handles all DOS commands that you give at the

DOS prompt---such as COPY, DIR, DEL etc. These commands are built in with the

Command.com file. (Such commands which are built in are called internal

commands.).DOS has something called external commands too such as FORMAT,

USING DATABASES IN PHP

Introduction:

This isn't quite a full blown tutorial, I like to think of it as a mini-tutorial. This “mini-tutorial” will cover some of the most commonly used functions. There won't be a background section; we're going to go straight to work. Today, I'm going to discuss (if the title didn't give it away) connecting to and using a database with php. The database will be MySQL because it's just sooo darn popular.

Assembly nowadays is a hard thing to learn, not because it's difficult but

because people thinks that there is no reason to learn assembly! That's

not true... With assembly you can have total power above the computer, and

know exactly what he's doing. Try to remember that while trying to learn!

CREATE A PERSONAL SCREEN SAVER IN WINXP

This isnt a tweak, but a great little feature! For a great way to put your digital photos to work, try creating a slide show presentation for use as a screen saver. Here's how:

1. Right-click an empty spot on your desktop and then click Properties.

2. Click the Screen Saver tab.

3. In the Screen saver list, click My Pictures Slideshow.

4. Click Settings to make any adjustments, such as how often the pictures should change, what size they should be, and whether you'll use transition effects between pictures, and then click OK.

CONVERT TO BASIC AND DYNAMIC DISK IN WINDOWS XP

Windows XP Professional supports two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Basic disk storage uses partition-oriented disks. A basic disk contains basic volumes (primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives).

Dynamic disk storage uses volume-oriented disks, and includes features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes).

General Notes
Before you change a basic disk to a dynamic disk, note these items:

CHECK FOR DOS, CHECK TO SEE IF U ARE INFECTED

When you first turn on you computer (BEFORE DIALING INTO YOUR ISP),
open a MS-DOS Prompt window (start/programs MS-DOS Prompt).
Then type netstat -arn and press the Enter key.
Your screen should display the following (without the dotted lines
which I added for clarification).

XP FOLDER VIEW DOES NOT STAY TO YOU'RE SETTING., GRAB YOUR REGISTRY EDITOR AND JOIN IN

Why Doesn't Windows Remember My Folder View Settings?

If you've changed the view settings for a folder, but Windows "forgets" the settings when you open the folder again, or if Windows doesn't seem to remember the size or position of your folder window when you reopen it, this could be caused by the default limitation on storing view settings data in the registry; by default Windows only remembers settings for a total of 200 local folders and 200 network folders.

To work around this problem, create a BagMRU Size DWORD value in both of the following registry keys, and then set the value data for both values to the number of folders that you want Windows to remember the settings for. For example, for Windows to remember the settings for 5000 local folders and 5000 network folders, set both values to 5000.

RAIN DROPS

I was experimenting with some of the more advanced features of the Layer Styles dialog box and discovered some very handy techniques that can be used when you are creating transparent effects. The sequence for this “water” effect is done entirely in a single Layer Style. So once it has been created it can be saved and applied to any layer that has hard-edged opacity against a field of transparency. This also means you can paint on the styled layer and the effect will render “live”, so it’s pretty to watch.

SMOKE

It’s used in sacred ceremonies. It’s used to cleanse. It’s linked to the spirit world. It makes breath visible. It’s a sign of danger. Fire precedes it. It’s pollution. It stops breath. Smoke is a powerful symbol.

Compositionally, smoke is extraordinarily flexible. It can be thick or thin, heavy or diffuse, contained or scattered, simple or complex. You can draw a line in any direction, linking two objects or creating a new focus of attention. You can literally draw the eye to any point in an image along any path.

LOOKING THROUGH A GLASS

Here is a technique for digitally adding a glass object in front of a scene and making it look like it was part of the original scene. The trick is to carefully photograph the glass, paying attention to the shine and shadows. Then, make the glass transparent and distort the scene that you see through the glass. The result is convincing, if not optically correct.

LIGHTBLAST !

Looking for a way to give some extra “life” to a logo or type treatment? The two most common techniques to help a logo standout are a glowing edge or a drop shadow. This is based on the principle of type on pattern, which says that a contrasting edge makes it far easier to see something when it is positioned over a busy or moving background. But why be ordinary? By backlighting an image, we can dramatically offset it from its background. This technique works with almost any logo or type treatment.
